Moving Out

And Movin’ On Up

While living in a rented house or apartment can be a blast, there will probably come a time when you gotta jet. Depending on your relationship with your landlord, you will either exchange sad goodbyes with wishes of goodwill to each other, or you will avoid eye contact as you awkwardly pack up to leave. Before you do leave though, you need to TCOB (take care o’ bizness) with your landlord.Telling the Landlord: Holla!

If your lease is ending and you are moving on to better pastures, let your landlord know in advance, even if the lease is clear about when your renting time ends. It helps everyone prepare for the big day when you finally mosey out of your place. Send the landlord a written notice saying you will be moving out in the near future. The lease usually says how much in advance you have to let the landlord know you’re moving, but if it doesn’t, a good rule of thumb is at least 30 to 60 days before you plan to move. This gives the landlord time to find a new tenant. If you don’t give the landlord an early enough warning, he or she may charge you rent money for the inconvenience.
